Sit down in front of the fire with me. I will joik (traditional sámi singing technique) the animals, mountains and people from Jåhkåmåhkke (Jokkmokk). Ask me questions about sámi culture and drink coffee and try some dried reindeer meat.

Joik + Contemporary dance

In this unique experience Jasmine Skog and Juhán Niila Stålka shares stories from Jokkmokk through movement and sound. They mix traditional sámi joik and contemporary dance in a performance in the beautiful Alpine Garden in Jokkmokk. You also get the opportunity to ask questions about sámi culture try some dried reindeer meat.

I grew up in the south and learnt to joik from my father on our roadtrips north. I spent every holiday with my Áhkko and Áddjá (grandparents) in their cabin up towards Stuor Muorkke (Stora Sjöfallet).

As a joiker i have got the opportunity to perform at stages such as: Kungliga Dramatiska Teater, Skansen, Kungliga musikhögskolan, Kungsträdgården, Márkomeannu, Riddu Riđđu, Ájtte, The Sámi Parliament and Norrlandsoperan.

I have experience as a guide at Ájtte Museum aswell as a host at Sámi Duodji Sameslöjdstiftelsen.

What does other guests say?

  • “Sometimes there can be a very little gap between sharing a tradition and pulling a show for tourists. Juhán came as our guest and I think he left like he was almost our friend. Thank you for your generosity, authenticity and courage.”

    -Sara, Switzerland Living Wild 2020

  • “Even though I visited some museums about Sami culture and history. It is only through your picturefull and lively explanations and yoiking that your culture came to life. In a way a museum or book will never be able to. Thanks for sharing this insight into your life and culture.”

    -Lars, Austria Living Wild 2020

  • “Juháns Niila’s joik brings the north alive with both the vibrancy of the past and the urgency of the present.”
