Sámi Storytelling
and Joiking
Step into my låvdågoahtte, a traditional Sámi tent, and immerse yourself in the living cultural heritage of Sápmi. I invite you to sit on soft reindeer pelts, taste dried reindeer meat, and enjoy freshly brewed coffee prepared in the traditional way.
This experience offers more than a glimpse into Sámi culture—it is a journey into the indigenous storytelling traditions of the Sámi people. You will learn about joik, our ancient singing tradition that conveys emotions and paints vivid pictures with melody. When words fall short, we joik to express the essence of a person, an animal, or a landscape.
With years of experience as a sámi guide, I share personal anecdotes from Sápmi, insights into Sámi customs and traditions, all woven together by the joik melodies of the people, mountains, and animals from the area around Jokkmokk.
A central part of this experience is the opportunity to ask questions, making each event unique and shaped by your curiosity.
My hope is that you leave with a richer understanding of our indigenous values, a deeper connection to nature, and a more nuanced picture of the Sámi people in the modern world.
This 1.5-hour experience runs all year round and has earned top ratings on TripAdvisor. It’s perfect for anyone seeking a meaningful Sámi cultural activity in Jokkmokk.
I am looking forward to meeting you!

My name is Juhán Niila Stålka and i am a storyteller and joiker.
I grew up in the south and learnt to joik from my father on our roadtrips north. I spent every holiday with my Áhkko and Áddjá (grandparents) in their cabin up towards Stuor Muorkke (Stora Sjöfallet). As a joiker i have got the opportunity to perform at stages such as: Kungliga Dramatiska Teater, Skansen, Kungliga musikhögskolan, Kungsträdgården, Márkomeannu, Riddu Riđđu, Ájtte, The Sámi Parliament and Norrlandsoperan.
I have experience as a guide at Ájtte Museum aswell as a host at Sámi Duodji Sameslöjdstiftelsen and many years of experience from wokring in Sámi NGOs. -
I recommend dressing comfortably for the outdoors. While I provide a warm and inviting atmosphere around the fire, please be aware that the fabric of the tent is the primary protection from the elements. You may experience the authentic ambiance of the fire, including the scent of smoke on your clothes. Additionally, some hairs from the pelts used in seating may catch on your clothing during the experience.
